Putting

Skill Test 9 - Short Putts

Many would argue that teaching golf should begin closest to the hole with short putts because it builds confidence, fosters club face control, it’s easy to understand, and gives immediate feedback. Here a few reasons why it is so key:

1. Confidence Booster: Starting with short putts allows players to experience early success. Seeing the ball go into the hole reinforces positive feelings and encourages them to continue learning. Confidence is crucial, especially for beginners.

2.Developing the Basics: Putting teaches essential skills like correct grip, alignment, and a smooth stroke. These skills translate into other areas of the game, creating a solid foundation for future development.

3. Strategic Progression: Once players gain confidence and competence in putting, they can gradually move further from the hole, working on chipping, pitching, and eventually full swings. This progression mimics real play, where each shot builds toward finishing the hole.

Rules of the game:

Setup: Place 9 balls around the hole in a circle, each 3 feet away from the hole.

Objective: Score 1 point for each successfully holed putt.

Skill Test 8 - Medium Length Putts

Medium-length putts (typically ranging from around 15 feet) are crucial in golf for several reasons:

1. Scoring Consistency: Successfully sinking medium-length putts can save par, convert birdie opportunities, or avoid bogeys. These putts often arise after approach shots or chips, and making them consistently is key to lowering scores and maintaining momentum during a round.

2. Confidence Booster: Medium-length putts require a balance of touch and precision. Successfully making these putts builds confidence in your putting stroke, which can positively impact your performance on shorter and longer putts.

3. Impact on Overall Putting Stats: Medium-length putts make up a significant portion of putts during a round. Being proficient in this range reduces the number of strokes on the green and correlates with overall success in golf.

Rules of the game:

Setup: Place 9 balls around the hole in a circle, each 15 feet from the hole.

Objective: Score 1 point for each successfully holed putt.

Putting

Skill Test 7 - Long Putts

Here are three key reasons why long putts are crucial in golf:

1. Reduces Three-Putting: Successfully lagging long putts close to the hole minimises the risk of three-putting, which can quickly add unnecessary strokes to your score. Consistently good long-putting ensures better scores overall.

2. Builds Confidence and Momentum: Holing or getting close with a long putt boosts a golfer’s confidence. It can set the tone for the rest of the round, creating momentum and reducing pressure on subsequent shots.

3. Increases Course Management:Proficiency with long putts allows players to take calculated risks on approach shots. Knowing they can handle long putts makes it easier to aim for safer areas of the green, avoiding hazards and tricky pin placements.

Rules of the game:

Setup: Place 9 balls in a line approximately 30 feet from the hole.

Objective: Score 1 point for each putt that finishes within a 3-feet radius.

Skill Test 6 - Chipping

Here are three key reasons why good chipping is vital in golf:

1. Saves Strokes Around the Green: A good chip shot gets the ball close to the hole, setting up easy one-putts. Poor chipping leads to more strokes, making it harder to recover from missed greens.

2.Improves Scrambling Ability: Effective chipping allows golfers to save par (or better) when they miss the green in regulation, keeping their scores consistent.

3. Builds Versatility and Control: Mastery of chipping helps golfers navigate various lies, slopes, and green speeds, ensuring they can adapt to different course conditions and recover from difficult positions.

Rules of the game:

Setup: Place 9 balls approximately 3 paces from the edge of a green and aim at a specific hole roughly 30 feet away.

Objective: Score 1 point for every shot that finishes within a 3-feet radius of the hole.

Skill Test 5 - Pitching

Here are three key reasons why solid pitching is important in golf:

1. Enhances Scoring Opportunities: Pitch shots are essential for hitting greens from mid-to-short range (20-50 yards). Accurate pitching helps golfers get close to the pin, setting up more birdie and par-saving opportunities.

2. Provides Control in Challenging Situations: Pitching allows players to navigate obstacles like bunkers, rough, or water hazards and land the ball softly on the green with precision, even from tricky lies.

3. Improves Confidence in the Short Game: Strong pitching skills reduce pressure on approach shots and chipping, as players know they can recover well from missed greens and still salvage their score.

Rules of the game:

Setup: Select a flag on a green approximately 30 paces away and hit 9 balls at that flag with a GW or PW.

Objective: Score one point for every shot that finishes within 15 feet of the hole.

Skill Test 4 - Bunker Play

Here are three key reasons why sound bunker play is crucial in golf:

1. Turns Potential Disasters into Opportunities: Effective bunker play minimises the risk of taking extra strokes. A solid sand save can turn a bogey or double bogey into a manageable par preventing big numbers on the scorecard.

2. Enhances Versatility Around the Green: Many golf courses feature green side and fairway bunkers as strategic challenges. Strong bunker skills allow players to confidently handle these obstacles, improving their ability to navigate the course effectively.

3. Boosts Confidence and Momentum: Successfully escaping from a bunker can build confidence and provide a mental boost for the rest of the round, helping maintain a positive mindset.

Rules of the game:

Setup: Position 9 balls in a bunker approximately 15 yards from a flag on the green.

Objective: Score one point for every shot that finishes within a 15 feet radius of the hole.

Long Game

Skill Test 3 - Iron Play

Here are three key reasons why strong iron play is essential in golf:

1. Sets Up Scoring Opportunities: Accurate iron shots determine proximity to the hole on approach shots, creating chances for birdies and pars by leaving shorter and more manageable putts.

2. Controls the Ball’s Flight and Placement: Mastery of irons allows golfers to shape shots, control distances, and hit greens in regulation, avoiding hazards and positioning the ball strategically for the next shot.

3. Consistency Across the Course: Since irons are used in various situations—from tee shots on par 3s to approaches on par 4s and 5s—strong iron play ensures reliable performance across different hole types and distances.

Rules of the game:

Setup: Select 2 targets (think goal posts) on the driving 30 yards apart – hit 9 shots with a mid iron (5/6/7).

Objective: Score one point for every shot that finishes between the 2 targets and within 10 yards of your usual distance.

Skill Test 2 - Fairways / Hybrids

Here are three key reasons why accurate fairway woods and hybrids are essential in golf:

1. Versatility Across the Course: Fairway woods and hybrids can be used for a wide range of shots, including long approaches, tee shots on narrow holes, and recovery from the rough, making them indispensable tools for various situations.

2. Distance with Forgiveness: These clubs provide significant distance while being easier to hit than long irons or drivers. The forgiving design helps players achieve consistent contact and accuracy, even on mishits.

3. Improves Scoring on Long Holes: Fairway woods and hybrids excel in reaching par 5s in two or hitting long par 4s in regulation. Their ability to cover long distances effectively is key to staying competitive on longer courses.

Rules of the game:

Setup: Select 2 targets (think goal posts) on the driving 40 yards apart – hit 9 shots with a fairway wood or hybrid.

Objective: Score one point for every shot that finishes between the 2 targets and within 20 yards of your usual distance.

Long Game

Skill Test 1 - Driving

Here are three key reasons why the driver is critical in golf:

1. Maximises Distance Off the Tee: The driver is designed to deliver the greatest possible distance, helping players shorten holes and set up more manageable approach shots, which is key to lowering scores.

2. Sets the Tone for the Hole: A good drive can position the golfer advantageously, providing confidence and reducing pressure for the rest of the hole. Conversely, a poor drive can lead to recovery shots and increased difficulty.

3. Essential for Scoring on Par 4s and Par 5s: The driver enables players to reach favourable positions on long par 4s and par 5s, creating opportunities for birdies and pars while avoiding trouble areas like bunkers or hazards.

Rules of the game:

Setup: Select 2 targets (think goal posts) on the driving 50 yards apart – hit 9 shots with your driver.

Objective: Score one point for every shot that finishes between the 2 targets and within 30 yards of your usual distance.
